Later on Saturday (we're up to August 18) Bob took us on a tour of the University of California campus in Berkeley, which is quite lovely.

On Saturday we visited the Berkeley Flea Market, held each Saturday morning in the parking lot at the Ashby Street BART station. This is a drumming group that performs each week.

We had a lot of fun. The boys, Tristan and Zach, were there too, but not for this picture before we left. When we returned to the station, we found the train had run into a truck and wouldn't be operating that evening, so Mike kindly drove us back to Berkeley.

On Friday, we took the train with Marijo to Davis to visit Mike and Lori and family. This is the train station.

The food was not only good for us, but really quite good.

Thursday evening Ros and I went into San Francisco and ate at Matthew Guelke's "Lettus" vegetarian restaurant. Matthew is the son of our good friends Conrad an Anthea.

Later, I walked around Jack London Square, coming across the sculpture near a Barnes and Noble bookstore. Not quite sure the point of this. Neat eagle though.

On Thursday, I cycled in to Oakland to visit Mike in his office at the SEIU headquarters. (Service Employees International Union). We went out to lunch.

One of the more dramatic sculptures!

This was a Hindu scene, I think, of a fight between a hero god and a lot of biting monkeys. Which illustrates how we all feel sometimes, I think.

The museum was full of great treasures, like this one. Beautiful stuff. I've forgotten who this was, but I think it was from Burma.

Then we went to the Asian Art Museum in this building nearby. A daycare group happened to be marking by in this picture. All the kids were holding on to a rope.

Here we are inside, Marijo, Ros, and Bob, from a balcony... I'm on the opposite balcony.

City Hall is a grand building, and has recently been renovated. Ros is going up the grand staircase, at the top of which Marilyn Monroe and Joe Dimaggio were married. There were weddings going on when we were there.

In San Francisco we got off BART at the Civic Center and headed towards City Hall. The booths were for the Farmers' Market, which takes place downtown on Wednesdays.

Here's what it's like when BART goes under the bay. Note the lights zooming by!

On Wednesday we headed into San Francisco on BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit), which goes in a tube under the bay, a journey which is very loud.

The Golden Gate bridge from far away. It was a hazy day, with fog in the distance that at time hid most of the bridge from view, but later blew away.

The museum is indeed high over Berkeley and the Bay. No, she didn't fall.

Ros and I cycled up a steep hill to the Lawrence Hall of Science above the University of California at Berkeley. A mastidoon specimen.

There was a hummingbird amidst the prickley things, attracted by nearby flowers, I guess.

Among other things, Bob showed us some of the cactus gardens people have created in his neighbourhood. It's a dry and hot climate in Berkeley, and lots of different varieties grow.

Marijo's friend Bob showed us some of the sights of Berkeley. We went downtown and looked around, had a snack, bought a couple of posters, just did those sorts of touristy things.

And we came to housesit for Chuck and Dena, my brother and his wife, and to take these two for periodic walks - Jake, nearest the camera, and Lucy. Chuck and Dena went to a wedding in Maine.

We came to visit my dear sister, Marijo, whom we haven't spent a lot of time with over the past few years.

Our niece Leah Belzer Adams picked us up at the Oakland train station at Jack London Square. Actually, she went to the station for us twice - to pick us up, and back again when we realized we hadn't claimed our bags (we were so happy to get in!)

Finally, a bridge just north of Berkeley. It looked threatening, but the rest of the day actualy turned out fine.
